Wedding Vows – The Secret To Writing Yours

Writing your own wedding vows can be a daunting task. There is so much pressure to put boundless amounts of emotion into a few perfect words that it can be hard to even know where to begin. With that said, writing romantic wedding vows doesn’t have to be difficult.

Here are a few secrets that will help you pen the most amazing wedding vows possible, as well as tips and examples to draw inspiration from before sitting down to write your own vows.

Don’t Be Afraid to be Different

When it comes to writing wedding vows, don’t make the mistake of thinking you have to stick to a typical format. Anyone can write down a few cliche sentiments and call it a day, but your vows will become instantly more intimate when you include details that are unique to your love story.

Unique wedding vows are often the most poignant and romantic. Remember, your beloved is marrying you, not a Hallmark card. Insert details about your lives together and the individual journeys that lead both of you to this moment.

Wedding Vow Ideas:

What is it that makes your love story unique? What sets your fiancé / fiancee apart from everyone else in the world? What cherished moments, experiences, or interests are only shared by the two of you?

Examples:

“Our dogs couldn’t ask for a better mom and I couldn’t ask for a more wonderful woman to marry”

“I knew I loved you on our second date, when you spilled ice cream all over yourself and laughed.”

Timing is Everything

Wedding planning is full of important deadlines that need to be met well ahead of schedule. Because of this, it can be tempting to write your wedding vows months in advance so that you can check them off your all-important “to-do” list.

Writing your wedding vows too far in advance, however, can make them seem stale and far too polished. Instead, set aside time to write your vows during the days leading up to the wedding. With the wedding festivities already underway, it can be easier to express your true feelings about the commitment you are about to make.

Wedding Vow Ideas:

In the days before your wedding, what have you been thinking or feeling? What moments leading up to the day have taken your breath away?

Examples:

“All I could think about last night was how I am continually amazed by you and how lucky I am to have you in my life.”

“When I saw you sitting across from me at the rehearsal dinner, you took my breath away and every laugh reminded me why you are the one”

Wedding Vows

Less is More

It can be easy to go overboard when it comes to writing romantic wedding vows. Sometimes, however, the most amazing vows are ones that are short and to the point.

If you find yourself rambling because you can’t quite find the right words, take a breath and reconsider what it is you are trying to say. Remember – a genuine “I love you” is more impactful than a long paragraph filled with big words and flowery language.

Wedding Vow Ideas:

If you only had one, short sentence to express your love, what would you say? If you could only pick 2 things to vow to your beloved, what would they be and why?

Examples:

“I wanted to promise you so many things, but when I thought it over, only 2 things truly mattered….”

“The only thing I can give you is my heart, forever.”

Speak From the Heart

Don’t stress if you aren’t a professional wordsmith – no one at your wedding is expecting you to write the next great poem. For the most romantic wedding vows, simply write what you are feeling and use your own words.

If you find yourself stuck, clear your head and start writing down what you feel, even if the grammar is incorrect or it comes out in short, incomplete phrases. Or, create lists to organize your thoughts. When you are done, go back and sort out these words to create the perfect wedding vows.

Wedding Vow Ideas:

What are 5 characteristics about your bride or groom that you are the most in love with? What adjectives describe how you are feeling about getting married? What are the moments you consider milestones in your relationship?

Examples:

“You are kind, caring, and radiant, which is why I am so excited and happy about the idea of spending our lives together.”

“Our first date, our trip to the mountains, and the day we closed on our house were all days that reminded me you are the only one I want to spend my life with.”

I hope these tips have helped to show you just how easy creating awesome, personalized wedding vows can be.  If you found this helpful please drop me an email at bill@northernlightsstudio.net and let me know!
